উদাস-করা দৃষ্টিতে।

আগুন ছিলো গানের সুরে
আগুন ছিলো কাব্যে,
মরার চোখে আগুন ছিলো
এ-কথা কে ভাববে?

কুকুর-বেড়াল থাবা হাঁকায়
ফোসে সাপের ফণা
শিং কৈ মাছ রুখে দাঁড়ায়
জ্বলে বালির কণা।

আগুন ছিলো মুক্তি সেনার
স্বপ্ন-ঢলের বন্যায়-
প্রতিবাদের প্রবল ঝড়ে
কাঁপছিলো সব-অন্যায়।

এখন এ-সব স্বপ্নকথা
দূরের শোনা গল্প,
তখন সত্যি মানুষ ছিলাম
এখন আছি অল্প।

There was fire in the freedom-fighter woman’s

উদাস-করা দৃষ্টিতে।

Sorrow-drenched and distant gaze.

আগুন ছিলো গানের সুরে
(Agun chhilo ganer shure)
There was fire in the tune of songs,

আগুন ছিলো কাব্যে,
(Agun chhilo kabyey)
In poems, it fiercely burned,

মরার চোখে আগুন ছিলো
(Morar chokhey agun chhilo)
There was fire in the eyes of the dead—

এ-কথা কে ভাববে?
(E-kotha ke bhabbe?)
But who would believe such a thing?

কুকুর-বেড়াল থাবা হাঁকায়
(Kukur-beral thaba hakay)
Even dogs and cats would strike with claws,

ফোসে সাপের ফণা
(Foshe shaper phona)
Snakes hissed with raised hoods,

শিং কৈ মাছ রুখে দাঁড়ায়
(Shing koi machh rukhey daray)
The horned fish stood its ground,

জ্বলে বালির কণা।
(Jwoley balir kona)
And grains of sand would burst into flame.

আগুন ছিলো মুক্তি সেনার
(Agun chhilo mukti senar)
Fire lived in the hearts of freedom fighters,

স্বপ্ন-ঢলের বন্যায়—
(Shopno-dholo’r bonnay)
In the flood of their dream-soaked surge—

প্রতিবাদের প্রবল ঝড়ে
(Protidaber probol jhore)
In the storm of fierce resistance,

কাঁপছিলো সব-অন্যায়।
(Kampchhilo shob-onnay)
Every injustice trembled and fell.

এখন এ-সব স্বপ্নকথা
(Ekhon e-shob shopnokotha)
Now all these are just dreamlike tales,

দূরের শোনা গল্প,
(Durer shona golpo)
Stories heard from far away—

তখন সত্যি মানুষ ছিলাম
(Tokhon shotthi manush chilam)
Back then, I was truly human—

এখন আছি অল্প।
(Ekhon achhi olpo)
Now, I barely remain.
