ছুটি

মেঘের কোলে রোদ হেসেছে,
বাদল গেছে টুটি,
আজ আমাদের ছুটি, ও ভাই,
আজ আমাদের ছুটি।।
কী করি আজ ভেবে না পাই,
পথ হারিয়ে কোন্‌ বনে যাই,
কোন্‌ মাঠে যে ছুটে বেড়াই,
সকল ছেলে জুটি।।
কেয়াপাতায় নৌকো গড়ে’
সাজিয়ে দেব ফুলে,
তালদিঘিতে ভাসিয়ে দেবো,
চলবে দুলে দুলে।
রাখাল ছেলের সঙ্গে ধেনু
চরাব আজ বাজিয়ে বেণু,
মাখব গায়ে ফুলের রেণু
চাঁপার বনে লুটি।
আজ আমাদের ছুটি, ও ভাই,
আজ আমাদের ছুটি।।

Sunlight smiles from the lap of clouds,

বাদল গেছে টুটি,
(Badol gechhe tooti)
The rain has snapped its string and gone,

আজ আমাদের ছুটি, ও ভাই,
(Aaj amader chhuti, o bhai)
Today’s our holiday, oh brother,

আজ আমাদের ছুটি।।

Yes, today is our holiday!

কী করি আজ ভেবে না পাই,
(Ki kori aaj bhebe na pai)
What to do, I just can’t decide,

পথ হারিয়ে কোন্‌ বনে যাই,
(Poth harie kon bone jai)
Shall I wander lost into a forest wide,

কোন্‌ মাঠে যে ছুটে বেড়াই,
(Kon mathe je chhute berai)
Or run through open fields with pride—

সকল ছেলে জুটি।।
(Shokol chhele juti)
Let all the boys gather and glide!

কেয়াপাতায় নৌকো গড়ে’
(Keyapatay nouko gore)
We’ll build a boat with shet-palm leaves,

সাজিয়ে দেব ফুলে,
(Sajie debo phule)
And decorate it with flowers and sheaves,

তালদিঘিতে ভাসিয়ে দেবো,
(Taldighite bhashie debo)
Set it sailing on the pond so wide,

চলবে দুলে দুলে।
(Cholbe dule dule)
It will float and gently glide.

রাখাল ছেলের সঙ্গে ধেনু
(Rakhal chheler shonge dhenu)
With the cowherd boys and grazing cows,

চরাব আজ বাজিয়ে বেণু,
(Charabo aaj bajie benu)
We’ll roam the fields and play the flute now,

মাখব গায়ে ফুলের রেণু
(Makhbo gae phuler renu)
Dusting ourselves with flower’s bloom,

চাঁপার বনে লুটি।
(Chapar bone luti)
Rolling around in the champa grove’s perfume.

আজ আমাদের ছুটি, ও ভাই,
(Aaj amader chhuti, o bhai)
Today’s our holiday, oh brother,

আজ আমাদের ছুটি।।
